Running is the most basic, efficient, and inexpensive way to get in shape. It can help you to lose weight, increase strength and bone mass, boost your immune system increase self-confidence and improve your overall health. Running burns more calories than almost any other exercise. A beginning jogger can shed weight at the same rate as the veteran runner, since you will both burn approximately 100 calories per mile (1.6 km), no matter what your pace. Whether you cover this distance in fifteen minutes or four, if you are training the same level of effort the calories used are just about equal.
If you are new to running one of the most important things you need to remember is: the time you spend on your feet running is more important that the distance you cover. When you base your runs on time rather than distance it makes it very difficult to over-train or overexert yourself. If you over-train or overexert yourself the first time out you are likely injure yourself and less likely to want to ever run again.
